Black Window Blinds? Great Idea! - But Think Twice Before Buying Them

The question is: Why black? Do you think that black will give you better light control, or are you one of those originals who are looking for unique home decorations? If you belong to the first category, you will be disappointed: black-colored blinds provide the same amount of light blockage as their white counterparts.

The light control quality of your window blinds depends on two things: the material from which they are made, and the way in which they block light. For example, wood and faux wood blinds will give you better light control than vinyl blinds. In addition, you can get blinds with complete light blockage, if you choose no-holes blinds, cordless blinds, and blinds with hidden holes.

What black window blinds can really do is to absorb a lot of the light in the room. Dark colors, especially black, absorb sunlight, unlike white and light colors, which reflect light. So if you want to get a darkened room, don’t hesitate to shop for black blinds. This can be most reasonable in a bedroom or in the home theater.

Just don’t put black window blinds in a baby’s or child’s room. You might frighten your little one with such a bizarre selection. Teenagers are another matter: they themselves often have extraordinary tastes and may even like this choice, especially if they have a modern-style room.

Here are some examples where black window blinds might look appropriate in your interior.

Contemporary style

Black window blinds can fascinatingly contrast with many light or bright colors. If you like modern style, you can create a room in black and white tones. For example, you could have white walls, black window blinds, black and white furniture. You can add one- or two-colored, preferably bright items to this interior — a rug, a picture, or a decorative vase. Modern-looking aluminum black blinds, vertical or horizontal, match this style well.

Elegant classic style

This style works well with the living room. White- or natural–painted walls, a black chandelier, black blinds. The furniture can be finished with light or dark wooden tones. The room should have plenty of space, so as not to create a feeling of something dark and crammed. Bright-colored accessories, like rugs or pictures perfectly complement this décor. Black wood blinds will look excellent in such an interior. If you need blinds for wide windows or sliding doors, shop for black wood vertical blinds; if you have standard windows or French, look for horizontal wooden blinds.

Keep in mind, however, that black doesn’t fit in well with a sunny, hot area. As was mentioned above, black absorbs the sunlight and gives back warmth, so it becomes very hot in a room. In addition, black window blinds, especially wooden blinds, tend to fade quickly in the sun.
