How to Replace the Tilt Cord or Wand in Horizontal Window Blinds

No matter how good your window blinds are, you are likely going to have to do a simple repair at some point. It has nothing to do with the quality of craftsmanship or the price you pay. Window shades are just like everything else. Sometimes mechanical failure happens. When this happens, you will be prepared.

The Wand or Tilter May Break
Every now and then, the mechanism that allows horizontal window shades to tilt becomes damaged or flat out breaks. When this happens, there is no need to panic and no need to throw away your blinds. Step back, follow these instructions, and your window treatment will function like new in no time at all.

Instructions for Repairing the Wand or Tilter
Once you determine the blinds are broken; you will need to fix it. It doesn't take long and can be done by anyone. You do not need to call a professional.

1) Start by removing the metal end caps on both sides of the headrail.
a. Headrail: The headrail is at the top of the window blinds and are normally made of metal. Sometimes they are plastic. This is where the controls for the blind or shade is located.

2) Remove the wand or cord tilter by gently pulling on the rod out of the middle.
a. Tilt Cord/Wand: The tilt cord/wand is the mechanism used to twist open the blinds slats for all horizontal blinds.

3) Remove the mechanism from the headrail by gently pushing the mechanism to the right side. This should cause it to "pop" from the headrail.

4) Replace the mechanism with the new or fixed mechanism. Take care that the new mechanism "snaps" back into place at the top of the headrail.

5) Last, replace the tilt rod with the new or fixed rod and replace the end caps.

That is all it takes to fix broken tilt cord or wands. If something does go wrong with your blinds, you now know how to resolve the issue without any problems. The whole process only takes a few minutes and does not require any special tools.

Unfortunately, even though it is simple to do, many people will throw away their perfectly good window blinds because of this. Do not let this happen to you. If something goes wrong with your blinds, check the Internet for a simple solution. Those who do will find their blinds last a very long time.

Blinds and Shades Keep House Cooler During Summer
Studies have shown that when you install blinds in your home, you can reduce heat from the sun by as much as 45%. You might not think it just by looking, but wood blinds and faux wood blinds are perfect for this job. They allow the breeze from outside in while blocking the sun. In addition, they keep the heat in during winter.

Cellular Shades Save Energy
The Department of Energy says that if you install window shades properly, it is the easiest way to save energy. Honeycomb shades' (cellular shades') main attraction is the energy conservation. The unique design traps air in to insulate the house. In addition, you can buy honeycomb shades that match the amount of light you want to let in. You can get blackout shades all the way to solar shades, which block the sun but not the view.

Tips for Proper Blind Use
You can maximize your energy conservation by following a few simple tips.
• Winter - Open south-facing shades or blinds to get more heat.
• Summer - Keep blinds closed during the day to block out the hot sun.
• Nighttime - Keep your blinds closed to prevent loss of heat.

Finding the Right Blinds
When you start looking for the right blinds, start your search online. Not only is it easier to shop and compare online, but you can also compare energy efficient blinds. Choose the right blinds and you can get a Federal Tax Credit. Not all energy efficient blinds qualify for the credit but if you look online, you will be able to tell which ones do and which ones don't. Then you can make your choice based on fact and not opinion.

Tips For Installing Window Blinds on Large Windows

When there is a very large window to cover, many people choose vertical window blinds. They are easy to install and easy to operate. However, this is not your only option. If you want to install horizontal blinds over a large window, it is possible. However, you have to know a couple of tricks to get them ordered and installed properly.

When purchasing window blinds for a larger window, you need to know you cannot order them in one piece. One blind is just too heavy for that to work. Therefore, you will have to order them separately. You do have two options to make this work.

Option #1: 2 Blinds on 1 Headrail
You have the option of ordering two sets of blinds and putting them on the same headrail. There will be a break in the blinds and each set of blinds will have their own controls. The only thing shared is the headrail.

This option makes for easy installation, as you do not have to worry about the blinds being even or spacing them. They come perfectly aligned and ready for you to install. (Note: Since it is one headrail, the blinds will still be heavy.)

Option #2: 2 Blinds, 2 Headrails, 1 Valance
For this option, you would buy two sets of blinds each with their own headrail. Then you purchase a valance to cover both headrails making the blinds appear to be one.

When installing blinds for a common valance, you need to make sure the center mountings are touching each other. This way the blinds look right once the valance is installed.

This option is generally the cheaper option. Most places charge extra for 2 on 1 mounting. It can also make the shipping price a little cheaper as well.

How do they look?
After the blinds are installed, both options look exactly the same. Therefore, you can choose whichever suits your needs. You will get the same effect and the same results no matter which option you choose.

More Information
If you need help on deciding which blinds, talk to window covering distributor. You should be able to contact customer service to help you figure out if there is a surcharge for 2 on 1 and how it affects shipping rates. You may even decide that vertical blinds are what you need after all. Whatever your question, a quality blinds distributor will have the answers for you.

Window Shades and Blinds For Your Personal Style

Window shades and blinds are a great way to add some color and character to a room. You can change the whole look of a room just by updating your window coverings. There is such a huge choice available in all colors, styles and textures that you will be spoiled when you embark on your journey to find the window shade or blind that best suits your needs.

However, before you get carried away with silk or suede, cotton or canvas there are a few things you need to consider. If you get your basics right, then you will be well on your way to choosing wisely and getting exactly what you want. It's usually too late to return your purchases after you have hung or installed them on your windows. So to start with, answer the three questions below.

1. Light:

How much light do you have coming into the room through the window that you are looking to cover? But more importantly is the amount of light that you may be blocking out if you choose certain fabrics for your coverings. Do you want more or less light in your room? Once you have an understanding of this then you can choose the fabric that is most suited to achieving this.

2. Privacy:

Are you looking for window shades and blinds to give you more privacy? Perhaps you are covering a window that many people can look in through and you want to redress this. If this is the case then you won't want to pick any transparent materials for your windows. They may look lovely and delicate but they will not keep out those prying eyes.

3. Insulation:

As so much heat escapes through your windows, this can in some ways be reduced by your choice of window covering. Conversely, you may want lots of fresh air flowing through. Especially if you have a small kitchen where the only escape for food smells is through the window.

So you see it is important to take a little time before you get out the measuring tape, to understand what you are trying to accomplish when choosing your new shades or blinds. Always check the measuring guides that are available on all the manufacturer websites to make sure you are measuring correctly for their product, and if in any doubt just give them a call.

How to Choose the Perfect Blinds For Your Windows?

Interior decoration of your home is not easy unless you have the money to splurge on a professional. But doing it up by your self can be fun too! Windows are an integral part of your home as they are the openings through which you can see the outside world. Beautiful windows are aesthetically appealing and make a home much more welcoming. After you have chosen what kind of window you want, it is time for you to decide on window treatment, that is, the blinds.

Deciding on window blinds is not easy. You want your home to look pretty and inviting, but don't want your blinds to take over the attention from the other things in a room. The right blinds will fit your windows perfectly without any loose ends. There is a huge assortment of blinds available in terms of color, styles and prices. Choosing the perfect from among them can be a pretty daunting task. But don't worry, blinds are actually not very expensive if you choose well, and they are very attractive to look at.

One thing you need to decide is whether you want different kind of blinds in each room or a single kind throughout your home. While the latter option may save you from the task of choosing blinds for each room, the former option is certainly better. Following are a few tips which will help you decide the kind of blinds that will go best in each room of your home.

The bathroom

Condensation is a problem with all bathrooms and choosing blinds which deals with it effectively is necessary. Venetian or roller blinds is a good idea for the bathroom. Alternately, you can choose a water-resistant blind which will not get damp or wet. Don't buy blinds in heavy fabrics for the bathroom as that would attract moisture. If you have decided on Venetian blinds, go for wood-effect blinds instead of real wood ones.

The bedroom

This is the area of the room where you relax after a long day's work and it is important that you choose soft fabrics and relaxing colors. Roller or Roman blinds are a great idea for this room as they are not only pleasing to the eye but they also keep the light out of the room. Blackout Roller blinds are also available which will keep out the sun totally. If cluttering is not your style, choosing a simple fabric for your bedroom blinds is a good idea. Simplicity can actually be quite attractive.

The kitchen

When you are choosing a blind for the kitchen, make sure that the fabric is not too heavy and can be wiped easily. This part of the room may be quite humid so keep that in mind when you are shopping.

The living area

Browse through different colors and fabrics and choose one that is the most cheery. Have fun shopping for the perfect blinds for your windows.
